The Words of Christ—Matthew 14:16-18

But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!” They said to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” (Matthew 14:16-18, New American Standard Bible).

Almost every Sunday School student knows the story. Jesus taught a large crowd of 5000 men, plus women and children, all day. The people were getting hungry, so Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish, multiplied them, and fed everybody. There were even leftovers—enough for each disciple to have an entire meal to himself!

We seem to overlook part of the story. We might remember that the disciples suggested that Jesus should dismiss the crowd so they could find food. However, we overlook Jesus’ reply: “They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!” Jesus had been teaching the crowd all day, but now it was time for the disciples to learn their own lesson. They had heard the lecture; it was time for the laboratory experiment. Jesus’ lesson was for His disciples of all ages, including us.

First, see how you can help instead of passing the buck. The disciples thought the crowd should go somewhere else and buy food. Instead, they should have thought, “Is there any way I can help this hungry crowd?” Likewise, we might be tempted to pass the buck. We might recommend organizations, ministries, or other people who might be able to help, and then we promise to pray for them. We want someone else to bless the other person. No, Jesus said, don’t tell someone to go elsewhere when you can help. See what you can do first.

Second, do whatever you can. The disciples did not have much to give: five loaves (they were small, more like biscuits or rolls) and two small fish. John 6:8-9 says that this meal actually belonged to a small boy. It was not much; it would feed one person, but not an entire family, let alone a throng of thousands. Nevertheless, Jesus accepted it.

Finally, give what you can to the Lord and let Him multiply it. You might not have much to offer. Your money might be limited. You may not have expertise in any ministry. You may not have a lot of time to serve others. Give what you can. Jesus took a child’s meal, multiplied it, and fed a crowd the size of a small city.

He can use your time, talents, and treasures as well. Give it all to Him, and watch what He does with your life.
