The Words of Christ—Mark 9:38-41

John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. For the one who is not against us is for us. For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward” (Mark 9:38-41, NASB).

Jesus’ disciples took a while to unlearn the world’s approach to power and influence. They would occasionally bicker about who should be Jesus’ right-hand man when His Kingdom was established. “I should be sitting at Jesus’ right hand.” “No, I’m His best friend!” “No, I am!” (I wonder if Jesus sometimes felt like He was babysitting a kindergarten class.)

In response, John pointed out that they had tried to prevent a person from casting out demons in His name. “He’s not following us! He did not take Your course on Exorcism 101. We haven’t had a chance to make sure he understands and agrees with our official Statement of Faith. I’m sure You don’t want such rogue exorcists trying to pretend that they’re part of our ministry!”

Jesus corrected him. “Do not hinder him…. For the one who is not against us is for us.” This exorcist was showing that he had some faith in Jesus. Let him exercise his faith. Let him grow. Encourage him.

How do we set limits on others? Do we refuse to accept people as fellow Christians or partners in ministry for reasons even though Jesus might welcome them? How can we build bridges to minister with those who are serving Christ, but may not fit into our own mold or follow standards that we made up?
