The Words of Christ—Mark 1:17

And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men” (Mark 1:17, English Standard Version).

Jesus did not gather a team of highly trained theologians, scholars, and communications experts to spread the Gospel throughout the world. He began with a group of fishermen.

He wants us to use the gifts He has given us, not the skills that others think are necessary. Fishermen would know a few things about reading the situation, figuring out the best place to find fish to catch, spreading nets, using bait, etc. They may not have been great communicators, eloquent, or erudite, but they had skills and a mindset that they could adapt to a new situation. They could also relate to the needs of the poor people they would encounter.

Jesus does not need superstars or highly trained experts to advance His kingdom. Instead, He seeks faithful people who will spend time with Him, get to know Him, and then head out to cast the bait of His Word to those who are ready to receive Him.

What gifts, skills, or other traits can you use to minister to others, communicate God’s Word to others, and build the kingdom of God?
